1st XI vs Harrogate II - 22/06/13

Following 3 positive results in a row we travelled to bottom of the table Harrogate 2nd XI looking to continue the momentum.
With more players returning than missing from the previous week some difficult decisions were made at selection. The only change was Phil for Ben which meant a strong 2nd XI could be fielded.
The toss was lost again (5 in a row) and again we were put into bat. The pitch looked good and with obvious rain around it was always going to be stop start innings.
Simmo and Mikey opened again and with some solid but steady batting the innings was set on a solid platform. After a couple of rain delays their partnership ended on 67 when Mikey was bowled for (27.)
Similar to last week, Murphy and Simmo then set about upping the run rate, adding 85 before Simmo was judged LBW for a well played 64. Phil hit his 1st ball for 4 but this was his only scoring shot before an early lunch was called after a 3rd rain delay.
At this point George (15*) and Murphy (66*) were looking to build a big partnership and team score but the extended delay meant our innings was cut short at 188-3 off 36 overs.
With Danby missing, Jimmy Lee was given the new ball following his 5 wicket spell last week. Again he didn't disappoint and followed last weeks 5-37 with an even better 5-22. At the other end Bateman (1-37) was unlucky to see several edges fly between the slips and gully as well as a couple of dropped catches off his bowling   .
At 42-6 after 15 overs the game looked like finishing well within the 36 overs Harrogate had available.
However a combination of resolute defence and dropped catches meant we had to wait until the 28th over before Mikey picked up a wicket in his first over, Parker taking his 3rd catch for the 3rd week in a row.
A sharp run out between Simon and Parker picked up our 8th wicket and when Kelly (1-6 off 6 overs) picked up his first we had 3.5 overs to get the final wicket which we failed to get in 2 of our last 3 matches.
When Murphy got to his mark for the last over the match it looked like we may miss out again. The first ball was defended for 1, the second ball swung, nipped away and knocked over the top of off stump.
30 points again and a well deserved 2 pints each for the players courtesy of the Chairman.
Next week we play Heworth at home again with 3 or 4 players missing due to holidays etc so it's a chance to show squad strength.
